Three simple photography tips on the advantages of grey days
Let the softness of the light work for you.
Grey light doesn’t create shadows or drama, but it reveals subtle textures you’d miss on a sunny day. Look for bark patterns, moss, leaves, and gentle transitions in tone.
Use the even light to simplify compositions.
With no harsh highlights pulling your eye around, you can compose more calmly. Vertical lines, path curves, and tree spacing all become clearer and easier to work with.
Capture the mood of the day.
A grey day has its own atmosphere: quiet, soft, reflective. Some scenes are meant to feel calm.
Another short walk before meeting Favourite Middle Daughter for another 'before work coffee' from Roc and Floss at the market.
I was struck by how different the light was, one week later, almost to the minute.
No sunshine meant no shadows, so freedom to compose as i would have wished.
No fear of subjects being burnt out. The Advantages of Grey Days
The sky last week was a mass of sunlight, in this video you can see a much gentle sky with texture and pattern.
Use walks like this, throughout the year, to focus on more depth of colour.
The overall conclusion I'd like you to take with you is that there is very rarely a day devoid of photographic opportunity - you just need to stop and settle, and maybe imagine your'e a modern-day Monet, looking for the light to guide you.
